Modernism is trending.

Modern architecture has became increasingly more popular than traditional architecture because of its captivating, appealing looks that attract many people. Modern and traditional architecture can be found in many places such as commerical building, housing, plaza, resteraunt, etc. But what makes contemporary architecture so popular? Since we are living in the 21st century, we are surrounded by modern technologies and trendy fashions and as we absorb those things into our life, we tend to enjoy things that possess the futuristic looks, feels and the convenient they provide us.

When we hear about modern architecture, we think of contemporary housing. But what make it’s a modern house? Most modern house has straight walls and barely no round walls; simple, unicolor furniture; and bright, modernistic kitchen and bathrooms. The reason most houses use simple furniture because it easy to match with the wall colors or other furniture. Talk about color, many modernized house uses two to three colors of paints that usually go well together such as light blue and white, or white with black. In addition, contemporary house occasionally is very convenient, after all, it equips with modernized technologies that go well with the house. Some modern house are unaffordable considering it luxurious furniture, materials and its location. However, in today, many modern house can be affordable because of inexpensive furniture from IKEA, simple yet modern.

Similar to modern housings, contemporary commercial buildings, residential buildings, educational buildings are all have the futuristic looks and feels. Most of the New York City’s skyscrapers have the contemporary look like the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building.

Modern Architecture isn’t just about house or skyscraper, but it is also about sculpture. Contempo sculpture uses many shapes and provides an odd, bizarre characteristic that gives it a modernist aspect. Unlike contemporary, traditional architecture serves a different aspect. Instead of using shapes, it tend to focus on ancient sculpture like statues.

Traditional Architecture

For housing, traditional style tend to be more colorful or curvy, providing the warmth, home feeling. Traditional house uses dark and light colors that gives it a 19^th or 20^th century characteristics. Moreover, adding old fashioned furnishing such as antique cabinetry or obsolescent sofa can grants it a traditional style. For historic building, traditional style gives it an ancient looks to show where it is originated. For example, hip-and-gable roof is a hip roof that slopes down on all four sides and integrates a gable on two opposing sides. At the end of the four corners, the roof tends to curve up. The roof style show where it is comes from and where it is influence by. It is most commonly known in East Asia.

Many people prefer modern architecture over traditional one is because it provides a cool environment; whereas, the traditional style tends to feel humid as it materials and furnishing is made of woods. The benefit of building a modern architecture over a traditional one is that it can be built on anywhere and still looks amazing. Whether if it is on a cliff or mountain or on the surface of the ocean, it still looks stunning and astonishing. So modern or traditional, architecture will be architecture no matter what style it is.
